If you're selling on TikTok Shop, creating content that drives affiliate revenue, or building a brand around viral products, this guide is for you. I'm Ashlin Hadden — a licensed insurance broker in all 50 states — and I write TikTok Seller Insurance as my specialty. I've seen what happens when sellers skip coverage, and I've seen what happens when they get it right.
This is everything I'd tell you over a 30-minute phone call about insurance for TikTok sellers, minus the small talk.
== WHY GENERIC BUSINESS INSURANCE DOESN'T WORK FOR TIKTOK SELLERS ==
Most standard small business policies were written before social commerce existed. They assume a traditional storefront or a basic online catalog. TikTok Shop operates differently, and the risks reflect that:
Discover why product liability insurance for TikTok sellers is essential. Learn how TikTok seller insurance protects your shop, covers claims, and meets TikTok Shop insurance requirements.
- You can go from 10 sales a week to 10,000 sales overnight when a creator posts about your product. Policy limits set at quote time may already be insufficient by the end of the month.
- Every piece of video content creates potential media liability — copyright claims from music, right-of-publicity claims from anyone appearing in a video, trademark claims from references.
- Creators and affiliates who promote your products can make statements that create liability for YOU, not just themselves.
- TikTok's algorithm can remove, suspend, or close shops based on compliance issues unrelated to safety — including lack of insurance documentation.
A generic Business Owner's Policy (BOP) wasn't built for any of that. Insurance for TikTok sellers is.

== WHAT'S ACTUALLY IN A TIKTOK SELLER INSURANCE POLICY ==
A properly structured TikTok Seller Insurance policy usually bundles several coverage types into one document:
General Liability — Covers bodily injury and property damage arising from your products or business operations. Standard limits are $1M per occurrence / $2M aggregate.
Product Liability — The big one for TikTok sellers. Covers claims that a product you sold caused harm. Includes defense costs, which can dwarf actual settlement amounts.
Professional Liability (Errors & Omissions) — Covers claims alleging you gave bad advice, misrepresented a product, or failed to deliver what was promised. Critical for service-based TikTok creators.
Media Liability — Covers copyright, trademark, defamation, and right-of-publicity claims from video content. TikTok-specific because video content is your primary marketing channel.
Commercial Property (optional) — Covers your inventory, packaging, equipment, and any physical assets if you have a warehouse, office, or home business space.
Policy limits scale with your sales volume. Most TikTok Shop sellers start with $1M/$2M general and product liability and add coverages from there.
== HOW MUCH DOES INSURANCE FOR TIKTOK SELLERS COST? ==
Honest answer: most TikTok Shop sellers I write pay between $40 and $150 per month for a complete policy.
What moves the number:
- Annual revenue — Higher sales equals higher product liability exposure equals higher premium. Sellers under $100K in annual TikTok revenue sit at the low end. Sellers over $1M pay more.
- Product category — Apparel, accessories, and home goods are lower risk. Supplements, beauty products, food, kids' items, and anything consumable are higher risk and priced accordingly.
- How many platforms you sell on — Some carriers offer multi-platform discounts if you also sell on Amazon, Shopify, or your own site.
- Claims history — First-time commercial insurance buyers pay less than sellers with prior claims.
Anyone quoting you under $30/month for TikTok Shop coverage is probably selling you a policy with platform exclusions. Read the fine print.
== CLAIMS-MADE VS. OCCURRENCE: THE THING NOBODY EXPLAINS ==
This is the single most important technical concept in insurance for TikTok sellers — and most sellers don't learn about it until they try to cancel a policy.
TikTok Seller Insurance is usually written on a CLAIMS-MADE basis.
Claims-made means: your policy must be active at TWO specific moments for a claim to be covered.
1. When the incident happens
2. When the claim is reported to the insurer
If either is outside your policy period, the claim may be denied.
Amazon seller insurance is usually written on an OCCURRENCE basis, which only requires the policy to be active when the incident happens. That's a much more forgiving structure, but it's not how TikTok coverage typically works.
Why it matters: if you switch carriers, cancel your policy, or let coverage lapse — and then a customer files a claim six months later about a product you sold last year — the claim may not be covered unless you purchased EXTENDED REPORTING COVERAGE (also called "tail coverage") before the original policy ended.
Always ask your broker about tail coverage before you make any changes to a claims-made policy.
== TIKTOK SHOP COMPLIANCE: WHAT THE PLATFORM ACTUALLY ASKS FOR ==
TikTok Shop's Insurance Center (the compliance portal sellers upload COIs to) requires a Certificate of Insurance that includes:
- Your legal business name and DBA (must match your TikTok Shop account)
- Specific coverage types (General Liability, Product Liability at minimum)
- Coverage limits (usually $1M/$2M minimum)
- Policy effective and expiration dates (must be current)
- Carrier name and AM Best rating (TikTok prefers A-rated carriers)
When you buy a TikTok-compliant policy through a specialized broker, the COI is formatted to meet every TikTok requirement on first submission. When sellers buy generic policies and try to upload them, they often get rejected and have to request endorsements from their carrier — which takes days and risks account suspension while they wait.
== WHO THIS APPLIES TO ==
Insurance for TikTok sellers isn't just for "shop owners." The coverage structure addresses a wider platform ecosystem:
TikTok Shop merchants — You sell physical products directly to US consumers through your shop.
Creators with affiliate links — You promote other brands' products and earn commission. You face liability when a product you endorsed allegedly causes harm.
Dropshippers and resellers — You're selling products you didn't manufacture. That doesn't eliminate your liability — it creates a different version of it.
Private label brands — You're the "seller of record" on TikTok Shop even though you outsource manufacturing. The product liability still rolls to you.
Agencies managing TikTok Shop for clients — You may need E&O coverage separately, plus you should verify your clients are covered.
== HOW TO GET A QUOTE FAST ==
If you're ready for a quote, what I'll need from you:
- Your TikTok Shop handle and the months/years you've been selling
- Product categories you sell in
- Annual TikTok Shop gross revenue (or projection if you're newer)
- Whether you also sell on Amazon, Shopify, eBay, or your own site
- Any prior claims or losses (doesn't disqualify you — just shapes the carrier match)
Typical turnaround: 24 to 48 hours from quote to bound policy with a TikTok-compliant COI in your inbox.
If you're not ready to quote but you want to understand your options, I answer every email personally. I'm not a referral service — I'm the broker writing the policy.
== FINAL WORDS ==
If you remember nothing else from this article, remember three things:
1. Insurance for TikTok sellers is different from generic small business insurance. Don't assume your existing policy covers TikTok Shop — most don't.
2. Most TikTok policies are claims-made. That has real consequences when you cancel or switch. Ask your broker about tail coverage before you do anything.
3. Upload a compliant COI to TikTok Shop's Insurance Center BEFORE the platform asks for it. Compliance is cheaper than suspension.
